Classic Starburst Papers

The subject of starbursts is very rich in the astronomical literature. So at the beginning of spring term, 1997, the JHU/STScI Starburst Journal Club compiled a list of "classic" starburst papers. We feel these papers have shaped and defined our understanding of the starburst phenomenon. The list is compiled in subcategories below. These are not the latest, or necessarily the definitive statements on the subject but they are defining papers or the beginning of important threads.

Emission line spectra

Optical broad band evolution

Ultraviolet, dust extinction

Multi-wavelength dissection

Far-IR

mm wavelength - Molecular gas

Important surveys

Galaxy Evolution

Dwarf galaxies especially blue compact dwarfs

Dynamical Theory, observations

Winds
