Fresh OS X Installation Instructions

Place the PowerBook G4 "Software Install and Restore" DVD rom into the DVD slot
Power off the PowerBook
Power on the PowerBook while holding the "option" key
This will allow the PowerBook to boot from CD
- From the Installer:
  - Select Language
    - Select "Use English for the main language"
    - Agree to the Software License Agreement
    - Select a Destination
      - Macintosh HD
      - Select the "options" button
      - Select the "Erase and Install"
      - Format disk as: "Mas OS Extended (Journaled)"
    - Click on the "Continue" button
  - Click on the "Install" button
Laptop will reboot

Laptop will go through the initial boot
- Under "the name of the country or region you're in"
  - select "United States" and click on the "Continue"
- Under "keyboard" layout
  - select "United States" and click on the "Continue"
- At the "Your Apple ID" screen
  - select "Don't create an Apple ID for me." and click on the "Continue"
- At the "Registration Information" screen
  - Enter "JHU" in the First Name field
  - Enter "Advanced Camera for Surveys" in the Last Name field
  - Enter "Physics & Astronomy" in the 1st line of the Address field
  - Enter "3400 N. Charles St" in the 2nd line of the Address field
  - Enter "Baltimore" in the City field
  - Enter "MD" in the State field
  - Enter "21218" in the Zip Code field
  - Enter "410 516-8312" in the Phone Number field
  - Enter "The Johns Hopkins University" in the Company/School field
  - Click the "Continue" button
- At the "A Few More Questions" screen
  - Select "College" as the "primarily use this computer"
  - Select "Engineering/..." in second drop down menu
  - Select "No" to "receive Apple news"
  - Click the "Continue" button
- At the "Thank You" screen
  - Click the "Continue" button
- At the "Create Your Account" screen
  - Enter "ACS Admin" in the Name field
  - Enter "acsadmin" in the Short Name field
  - Enter a secure password in the Password field
  - Enter it again in the Verify field
  - Click the "Continue" button
- At the "Get Internet Ready" screen
  - Select "I'll use my existing Internet service."
  - Click the "Continue" button
- At the "How Do You Connect?" screen
  - Select "Local network (Ethernet)"
  - Click the "Continue" button
- At the "Your Local Area Network" screen
  - Select "Yes" to "configuration supplied by this server"
  - Click the "Continue" button
- At the "Get .Mac" screen
  - Select "I'll set up a .Mac membership later."
  - Click the "Continue" button
- At the "Now You're Ready to Connect" screen
  - Click the "Continue" button
- At the "Set Up Mail" screen
  - Click the "Continue" button
- At the "Select Time Zone" screen
  - Click on the east coast of the US on the map
  - Select "Washington, D.C." from the Closest City pull down menu
  - Click the "Continue" button
- At the "Thank You" screen
  - Click the "Go" button
- The desktop will start up and the "Software Update" will run
  - Select all of the updates
  - Click the "Install Items" button
  - The Authenticate screen will appear, enter the password and click OK
  - Click on the "Restart" button
- Click on the PowerBook G4 "Software Install and Restore" DVD rom
  - Double click on "Install Applications & Classic Support"
  - Select the defaults
  - This will bring up the Restore Software
    - Select the "Restore All" and click the Install button
    - When the "Restore Complete" screen appears, click the "Quit" button
- If it has not been done already for your laptop, request an IP address at http://eta/sysadmin/network/ip-request.html
  - Get Ethernet Address by clicking on the Apple in the upper left hand corner of the screen
    - go to "About this Mac"
    - Click on "more info...", then "Netowrk", then "Built-in Ethernet" and read the information from "Ethernet Address"

Installation of common OS X software

Essential Software Installation Rules:

All software installation is to be performed using account "ACS Admin"
All software is to be installed to the "Applications" directory

Unless otherwise noted, software installation goes as follows:

Download the software
- You download either a disk image (.dmg) that OS X automatically mounts or
- You download a stuffit file (.sit) that automatically expands
The software disk image or folder will contain a file that you click and drag to the applications folder

Note: in some cases, you may run an installation program. In these instances, instructions are provided

Apple's X11, developer's tools

Download Apple's X11 for Mac OS X
- Go online to http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/x11formacosx.html
- Click the "Download" button
- X11 Installer will start
- Select the defaults
- at the end, click the "Close" button
Go to "Applications"-->"Installers" folder-->"Xcode Tools"
- Double click on "Developer.mpkg" and select the defaults up to "Select a Destination"
- Click on the "Customize" button on "Easy Install" screen
  - Select X11 SDK
- Click the "Install" button
- Enter password at the Authenticate screen & click the "OK" button
- at the end, click the "Close" button
- Place the Installer folder into the trash and empty it

Alternate web browsers, e-mail clients, SFTP

Download and install Mozilla-based web browsers or e-mail clients

- Ask Alex Framarini (Bloomberg 216) for his Microsoft Office Applications CD
- For installation purposes, enter "Advanced Camera for Surveys" as your name and "Johns Hopkins University" as your organization
Download Emacs at http://www.inf.unibz.it/~franconi/mac-emacs/
GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program)
- Download gimp.app version gimp-2.0.0-5 at http://gimp-app.sourceforge.net/
- Install to Applications directory
Install Norton's Antivirus
- Download from http://it.jhu.edu/antivirus/
- Click on "downloads"
- Enter your JHED Credentials
- Get "NAV for Macintosh v10"
- download should appear on desktop
- Double click and select Mac OS X installation
- Select the defaults
- Logout when prompted to finish the installation
LaTeX
LaTeX Installation Instructions
- use Gebren Wierda's I-Installer to install LaTeX (found at ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/comp/macosx/volumes/ii2/II2.dmg)
- Run i-Installer and choose the item "Known Packages i-Directory..." at the top of the "i-Package" menu
- Install packages using the I-Installer in the following order:
  - FreeType 2
  - libwmf
  - Ghostscript 8 (say "yes" to option adding ghostscript to CLI)
  - ImageMagick
  - Font Forge (previously PfaEdit)
  - TeX (when installing, choose default choices for all options except page size, where you should select "letter")
- Download aastex.cls
- in a "Terminal" window, run the following commands:
% sudo mkdir /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/tex/latex/ % sudo cp aastex.cls /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/tex/latex/ % sudo /usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-current/mktexlsr
Note: LaTeX will only run properly from the Mac OS X Terminal. Additional installation required to run under X11 Terminal.
Sci-Soft, Mathematica, and IDL

Please note that in order to complete Sci-Soft and IDL installation, you will need to create and set up a user account.
- Download SciSoft from Version Tracker, or get the CD from Alex Framarini in room 216.
  - Open the SciSoft disc image or insert the SciSoft CD.
  - Double click on the package installer
  - Use the defaults
  - Click on the "Close" but when finished install
  - Copy X11 onto the Apple dock
    - start a "Terminal" and add "source /scisoft/bin/Setup.csh" to user's .cshrc
    - as user, start X11
    - mkdir iraf; cd iraf
    - mkiraf
    - start a xgterm
    - cl to test IRAF ("logout" to exit)
    - pyraf to test PyRAF (".exit" to exit)
    - ds9 to test ds9
  - check for updates at http://www.stecf.org/macosxscisoft/
  - Install SuperMongo -- STRICTLY FOR ACS USERS ONLY
    - Get SuperMongo CD from Alex and copy sm directory to local HD
    - run ./set_opts to set options, choose all defaults except only compile with X11 support and do not add the option for emacs support.
    - edit and remove the first seven (7) lines of text from src/options.h
    - make; sudo make install
    - add the following to the user's .cshrc: setenv PATH ${PATH}:/usr/local/bin
- Install Mathematica
  - Get CD from the P&A department
  - After installation, run once and enter "Advanced Camera for Surveys" for the user name, "Johns Hopkins University" as the organization
- Install IDL and install IDL license
  - Get IDL 6.0 Mac OS X CD from Alex (Bloomberg 216)
  - Double click on the package and select the defaults up to the Destination screen
  - Choose HD-->Applications as the installation directory and click the "Install" button
  - add "source /Applications/idl/bin/idl_setup" to user's .cshrc
  - Install patches (if any) from the CD by copying files in the patches directory over existing files in your Applications/idl directory
  - Get IDL License
    1. Contact ACS sysadmin for an ACS license (if it is for ACS work)
    2. if this is for non-ACS, then the user can request a non-ACS license at http://www.pha.jhu.edu/sysadmin/contracts/idl/idl-request.html
    3. Add license.dat to /Applications/license/ when you receive your license
  - Install IDL Astronomy Library
    - Download from http://idlastro.gsfc.nasa.gov/ftp/astron.dir.tar.gz and unpack to /usr/local/site/idl_astrolib-${VER}
    - sudo chown -R root:bin /usr/local /site/idl_astrolib-${VER}
    - add the following line to idl_setup (/Application/idl/bin/): setenv IDL_PATH "<IDL_DEFAULT>:+/usr/local/site/idl_astrolib-${VER}"
Adding and Configuring a new user
- Add new User
  - Click on the Apple icon in the top left-hand corner and select "System Preferences"
  - Click the "Accounts" icon under System
  - Click the "+" symbol in the lower left to add a new user
  - Select a Name (full user's name) and a Short Name (real username), as well as a password and hint
  - Under "Picture" select the user's icon
  - Click on the lock on the lower left to make changes
- As user, alias rm rm -i
- Changng a User's shell to tcsh (OPTIONAL)
  NOTE: By default, OS X 10.3 and 10.4 use bash as the default shell.
  - Double click on "Netinfo Manager" in the "Utilities" folder (under Applications)
  - Click on users in the second column
  - Click on the user
  - Click on the lock on the lower left to make changes
  - Enter password to make changes
  - find and click on /bin/bash
  - change it to /bin/tcsh
  - Click on the lock and Update this copy
  - exit out of Netinfo Manager
Securing the system (Open Firmware, settings)
- Download Apple's Open Firmware at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120095
  - Install Open Firware by dragging it to Applications
  - Run Open firmware, hit "change" and select an open firmware password
  - System can no longer be booted from an external device or CD without the open firmware password
- Bring up "System Preferences" and Click on "Security"
  - Click on "Require password to wake this computer..."
  - Click on "Disable automatic login"
  - Quit System Preferences
Post-Install Configuration
- Enable window focus to follow the mouse
  - For X11, enter into a "Terminal": defaults write com.apple.x11 wm_ffm true
- Enable SSH, FTP
  - Go to System Preferences and click on "Sharing"
  - Turn on "Remote Login" for SSH, "FTP Access" for FTP
- Enable Firewall
  - While in "Sharing" preferences, click "Firewall" tab and start the Firewall
Adding and Configuring the Printers
- Go to Application --> Utilities --> Printer Setup Utility
- Add new printer
- Select IP Printer, and use the information below for Address, Queue name and printer Model
  - adcam: acslp2 (HP Laserjet 4050)
  - adcam: acscolor2 (Tektronix Phaser 780 with Graphics Features)
- Set acslp2 as the default printer
